Secret STEAM Society: Horses by Trevor Mueller

Three

Mueller’s Secret STEAM Society: Horses is a delightful introduction to the world of horses, both ancient and modern, how we interact with modern horses, horse anatomy, and horse behaviour.

I enjoyed learning about early horses, but I wish the author had spent more time on them. Even for an overview, the text abbreviates much of the information, making it seem disjointed at times. I feel the book would work better by focusing on just one or two areas and expanding into two or three volumes about horses (or any other topic in the series, to provide the most benefit).

Bruh, the archaeologist in me had to laugh and laugh. In reality, the Bering Ice Bridge was not so cute and happy-go-lucky 😹😹. Think more massive glaciers covering the entire area, with the dangers of crevasses and the like. It was no easy walk in the park for humans to get over to North America.

I found the little alien, Toot, annoying. Because he was so excitable, his reckless behavior, by all rights, should have killed or maimed those kids several times over. Leaving the instructor behind to go off on impromptu field trips put them in unnecessary danger. It deprived them of any valuable knowledge the instructor could have shared.. And his random insertions, like ‘I love it’, too frequently, and sometimes out of context. I feel like the professor could have used the time technology at this fantastical school, and provided more engaging input. Just sayin’.

Big fix for the final version- Columbus stumbled on the Americas in 1642, not 1942 😹😬. It was confusing at the end, where it mentioned horses need REM sleep every few days and the very next page says that horses need REM sleep every day.
