Jurassic Giants by Jacqueline A Ball

Jurassic Giants by Jacqueline A Ball opens with a brief overview of the Mesozoic, before delving into the first of six major foci of the book- Tyrannosaurus Rex. The others are Giganotosaurus, Spinosaurus, Allosaurus, Utahraptor, and Sarcosuchus. Each section had a few pages devoted to each dino and how it stacked up to Tyrannosaurus.
My cubs and I read this book together. I loved that Dakotaraptor was mentioned! This is a more recently discovered super raptor like Utahraptor. I didn’t particularly like that ‘reptile’ kept being used to refer to the dinosaurs. Yes, -saur means lizard, but we are learning more and more that many dinosaurs were warm-blooded, and really fall into a category all their own. Even my cubs called that out. A great book for any dino-loving kids!

History Uncovered: Dinosaurs by Dennis Schatz

Schatz’ History Uncovered: Dinosaurs is a very brief overview of dinosaurs over the world. Each page is beautifully detailed, with short facts about dinos and geography. Each dinosaur mentioned has a pronunciation with it. The first part of the book deals with the various time periods, and with landmasses. Later sections look at flying and underwater critters, extinction causes, and how fossils are located and processed. My cubs and I read this together, and quite enjoyed it. My only qualm is how short the book is, with each section barely brushing the surface of information available. A perfect gift for the aspiring paleontologist in your life.

The 50 State Fossils by Yinan Wang & Jane Levy

Wang & Levy’s The 50 State Fossils covers each of the 50 US state fossils. Every entry has a picture of the fossil (or fossils), an illustration of the fossil(s), and information about each. Not every state has an official fossil yet, and these states are given suggestions based in what kinds of fossils are found in the region. All kinds of fossils are represented, not just dinosaurs. There are Cambrian oddities, and Ice Age giants, along with saurs. Plants and invertebrates are represented as well as vertebrates. My cubs and I enjoyed going through this book, seeing all the different types of fossils. This is a wonderful tool for illustrating us geography in a fun way, and is the perfect gift for budding paleontologists!
