Dandelion Sabir Pirzada

Dandelion by Sabir Pirzada

Four

Coupled with manga art from a variety of different artists, Pirzada’s Dandelion was an interesting foray into humanity’s possible future, and how the best of intentions can go horribly awry.

Hoping to present the world with a housing blessing at a time when the ice caps were melting and the seas taking back large swathes of land, Jen Nakamuto presented the world with the Dandelion. These self-contained structures were meant to drift over land like dandelion fluff, as truly mobile homes. But as with so much throughout history, government and greed turned the blessing to a curse, and the dandelion housing becomes a place to exile people and forbid them to ever set foot on the ground again. These are stories of those who live, love, and die far above the surface of the planet.

This reminded me of so many dystopian stories- Elysium, Final Fantasy VII, Star Trek TOS: The Cloud Minders– but flipped in their heads. Here, it’s the exiled and reviled that dwell way up high, and the privileged who still live on the dwindling land. The different art styles of each story made for interesting reading. Recommended, especially if you enjoy manga or dystopian stories.
